历史
　　加拿大最高法院是在加拿大四省获得自治领地位8年后即1875年，经国会条例创建的。起初，最高法院审结的案件还可以向英国的枢密院司法委员会再上诉。1933年，对刑事案件取消了这一制度；1949年，对其它案件也取消了这种上诉。最高法院终于成为加拿大的终审法院。最高法院最早由一位首席大法官和五位陪席或助理大法官组成。1927年，大法官人数增至七位。1949年，由于废除了上诉英国枢密院的制度，大法官席位增加至九名并延续至今。按规定，九个席位中，至少有三个席位应任命来自魁北克省的法官。
